The remote land of zanaskar lies hidden in huge mountains. the distance from kargil to padum is 254 kms long journey through some of the most beautiful valleys and villages which come under the suru valley and pensila pass. Right now from kargil is the only way to reach zanskar valley .govt is building a new road which will connect Leh and Padum via Zangla,and other new road in construction will connect padum to darcha in himachal Pradesh. padum is the largest town and centre of zanskar. There are many ancient monasteries in the Zanskar including Zangla, Stongde and Karsha, in padum region monasteries like bardan and kursha monastery are popular.Padum is largely inhabited by tibet descent who follow tibetian buddhism, but there is also a small muslim minority of ethnic group of Tibetan descent with some Dardic mixture, who live in the Gilgit-Baltistan region of Pakistan. Zangla is a tiny village at the northeast end of Zanskar region.
